Cadet Teaching and Project TEACH

Cadet Teaching began in 1988 as a means of interesting Riley juniors and seniors in the field of teaching.

In order to become a Cadet Teacher, a student must first be a member of Project TEACH. Prerequisites for membership are a GPA of 3.0 or above, excellent attendance and good citizenship. (Exceptions to the GPA are made occasionally.)

Cadet teachers can help at any Riley feeder school-elementary, middle school, parochial schools or can assist in freshman classes or Special Ed at Riley. When they begin, they observe and do regular assignments. They also keep daily logs of their participation.

Why Cadet teaching? Cadet Teaching provides students with exploratory teaching experiences in grades K-12 before entering college. It enables students to interact in the classroom and helps in their career decision making. Study and experiences related to classroom management, organization, and instruction along with background information concerning the teaching profession are included.

Cadet Teachers help in a classroom by:

- Tutoring individual students or small groups

- Grading papers

- Teaching an occasional class

- Preparing bulletin boards and posters

- Preparing tests

- Making copies

- Occasionally preparing a lesson plan
