It all started in 1989 for this legendary shoe. Tinker Hatfield, the amazing and legendary Nike designer, once again, created this one. The Air Jordan IV featured many new design concepts: first, the straps on the side for increased ankle support. It was nearly impossible for M.J. to roll his ankle in these shoes. Also, the Air Jordan IV featured the air sole heel for added cushioning and a full-length midsole.
While wearing the IVs, M.J. led the league in scoring, with an average of 32.5 points per game, and collected numerous other awards, as well. That only helps to build the legend of the IVs.
Spike Lee even gave them a few minutes in his 1989 movie Do the Right Thing. One of the characters has his brand new Air Jordan IVs scuffed by someone walking by with a bicycle, and he proceeds to yell and berate the person for two minutes about the incident—before taking the shoe off and cleaning it with a toothbrush.
I know they are only shoes, but sometimes you can take a shoe as a snapshot of an era or as a trip down memory lane, and for me, the Air Jordan IVs will always be one of the best shoes I have ever owned.
